PREVIEW: Plymouth Argyle Women

25th February 2023

By Kieran Neller.

Cheltenham Ladies face Plymouth Argyle for the third time this season.

The sides played on the opening day of the season, where Cheltenham walked away 3-1 winners including a brace from Izzy Cook (pictured).

The Robinesses travelled down to Plymouth for the first round of the FA Cup too. The Pilgrims took the lead, and despite a fight back with goals from Cook and Amy Wathan, Cheltenham couldn’t level the scoring and came to a 4-2 defeat.

The game is the end of a packed week of fixtures. Tom Davies’ players lost to league leaders Portmouth on Sunday, before returning home for a midweek match under the lights against MK Dons. The match was a physical and fast game that ended in a draw thanks to goals from Annabel Davies and Cook.

Plymouth have had a mixed bag of results in recent weeks, beating Bridgwater United and London Bees, but giving bottom-of-the-league Crawley Wasps their first league win of the season.

Cheltenham have taken four points from their last four games, including a sensational win to knock an undefeated Oxford United off the top spot.

Having now played the game in hand that the Robinesses held for the last few months, Cheltenham’s midweek result pushes them to fifth in the table, overtaking Billericay Town by a point.

Plymouth currently sit in the relegation places at 11th, but their win in midweek shows that their side are still dangerous.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Davies stressed that Cheltenham will focus on their own game.

“We’re in a good space, we know Plymouth are going to be overjoyed by their result against Bridgwater. We need to remember to stick to the plan, to stay professional and do the right things.”

“We need stick to doing it our way and not get caught up in anything. We’re confident that if we play the way we know we can, and the players perform the way that they can, we will get results. That’s true every week.”

Plymouth Argyle v Cheltenham Town Ladies takes place at Manadon Sports Development Centre (postcode: PL5 3FD) at 2:00pm on Sunday, 26th February.
