MATCH PREVIEW: Gillingham Women

11th April 2021

Cheltenham Town Ladies return to Vitality Women’s FA Cup action tomorrow as they welcome Gillingham Women to the Jonny-Rocks Stadium (2pm).

With the action taking place behind closed doors, the game will be streamed on the club’s YouTube page, will see The Robinesses perform in the competition’s Third Round for only the second time, and their first time since 2008/09.

Looking ahead to the game, manager Tom Davies commented:

“I’m really excited. The players are really excited as well and it’s an opportunity like Sunday was, to go and show what we’ve been working on and how we want to play and the principles we’ve got.

“It’s an opportunity to make everyone proud again, we did on Sunday, and that’s what we’ll take in. It’s also an opportunity to play competitive football. Who doesn’t love that?”

Team News

First choice shot-stopper, Robyn Levett, will miss the game, after the Cheltenham ‘keeper sustained a bad knee injury just before Full Time in the Portsmouth game.

England and TeamGB Deaf goalkeeper, Molly Ripley, will step up in her place to make her full debut, she herself being no stranger to playing on the big stages.

Jade Grove only featured lightly in training due to a knock, but is expected to feature, as is Kirsten Rendall, who made her first appearance of the season last weekend after picking up a back injury in pre-season.

Opposition

Gillingham manager, Josh Oatham, was delighted following his side’s victory over fellow FA WNL Southern Premier outfit, Crawley Wasps, praising his side’s resilience and passion.

Oatham’s side showed a true underdog spirit last time out, overcoming Crawley in a five-goal thriller (3-2).

In the league, the Kent side find themelves sitting near the bottom of the table, picking up just two wins in the short campaign, a 2-1 win over Keynsham Town and a 4-0 drubbing of Hounslow.
