PREVIEW: Portsmouth

20th April 2024

By Owen Mason.

Cheltenham Town Ladies will be looking to build on an impressive March, as they welcome the Women’s National League Southern Premier Champions Portsmouth, to Kayte Lane on Sunday (2pm Kick-off).

The Robinesses had a near perfect month, with wins over London Bees, Billericay and Chatham. The only blemish on that record came in a narrow 2-1 defeat to Oxford. 14 goals were scored in that time which gave manager Tom Davies a nomination in March’s FA WNL Manager of the Month.

Last time out, the Robinesses beat already relegated Chatham Town, 3-0. A quickfire double from Emily Allen and Phoebie Poole was bookended by a stunning free kick from Poole, which moved us into seventh place.

This weekend they welcome the newly crowned champions Portsmouth, as their promotion to the second tier was confirmed without kicking a ball last weekend. Ipswich’s 2-0 win over Hashtag United meant the latter could not catch Jay Sadler’s Pompey side, who have only lost one game all season.

Back in August, in the opening game of the campaign, Portsmouth came out 5-0 winners, with a hat trick from Sophie Quirk. This game marks the penultimate game of the season, with the final game coming up in a fortnight’s time against Hashtag United.

Tickets are £6 for adults, and £3 for concessions, and will be played at Kayte Lane (GL52 3PD). Tickets can be bought in advance for this game, as well as on the gate, by clicking here.
