PREVIEW: Portsmouth Women

18th February 2023

The Robinesses are set to face National League Southern Division leaders Portsmouth Women this Sunday.

Cheltenham Ladies come into the fixture after a loss to a strong Watford outfit in their last outing after a series of great results against the likes of Oxford United.

On the other hand, Portsmouth have not dropped a point in the league since a defeat to Oxford at the end of October last year.

Still sitting at sixth in the table, the Robinesses have two games in hand on Billericay above them, while being level on points.

Despite their impressive results, Pompey aren’t clear at the top. Oxford have a game in hand with opportunity to leap-frog the league leaders, so the side will be out in full force on Sunday to cement their position.

The last time the two sides met was in the 2020/21 FA cup second round, where a 2-0 win for Portsmouth was overturned due to fielding an ineligible player, with the tie ultimately being awarded to the Robinesses.

Manager Tom Davies spoke ahead of the fixture.

“We’re looking forward to going down there. We’re playing in a better way, and we’re bringing our principles and outcomes against top sides. Portsmouth are another opportunity to do that.

Speaking about the upcoming three games in the space of eight days, Davies said that it doesn’t change too much.

“We have a fantastic squad. From the players that come off the bench to the players that rotate into the side. They’re all capable of achieving what we want to achieve.”

Portsmouth Women v Cheltenham Town Ladies takes place at the The Westleigh (postcode: PO9 5TH) at 2:00PM on Sunday, 19th February.
