A group of Cheltenham Town Ladies watched the pinnacle of European women’s club football last night at the Champion’s League Final.
Held at Cardiff City Stadium, the group saw Olympique Lyonnais triumph over PSG to win the trophy for the fourth time. In front of a 22,433 crowd the two French giants fought tooth and nail for 90 minutes and then into extra time.
With the score goalless after 120 minutes and the scores level at 6-6 in a penally shootout, the goalkeepers each took a penalty. PSG’s Katarzyna Kiedrzynek dragged her effort wide before OL’s Sarah Bouhaddi sidefooted the decisive spot-kick past Kiedrzynek into the corner of the net.
It was a moment which tugged at the heartstrings of Rebecca Panniers, Cheltenham Town goalkeeper. “It was a highly skilful game between two teams that know each other very well. When Katarzyna, who had had a great match, pulled her shot wide it was a heartbreaking moment. The whole crowd felt for her.”
