Former Portsmouth Women goalkeeper Mia Smith has become Cheltenham Town Women’s ninth signing of the summer.
The new Robinesses’ shot stopper brings Women’s Championship experience following spells with Watford Women and Rugby Borough, when the latter competed under the Coventry United name.
The Club’s latest signing was ecstatic to have joined, telling Gloucestershire Live: “It’s been great. I’ve only been here for a few weeks; all the girls and coaching staff are great. The set up is good, and training has been professional and enjoyable, so it’s been a good start.”
The 20-year-old looked back on her time at Portsmouth positively, as the side had a dream season in the Women’s National League Southern Premier, winning 20 out of 22 games to seal promotion to the Second Tier of Women’s Football.
Smith reflected on their triumphant campaign telling local media: “It was a great experience, being there was unreal! Going so many games unbeaten, was great, and all the promotion celebrations were fantastic!”
The former Pompey keeper was excited for the new season to start, saying: “I’m really excited to play matches, I think that’s a big thing for my development this season to get consistent minutes. I’m really excited to kick the season off.”
Smith is hoping her technical ability will contribue to a successful season for The Club, commenting: “I’m very good with my feet, very calm on the ball. Hopefully I’ll make loads of saves this season, some clean sheets, that’ll be the aim.
“I’m also very technical, good with my hands, so hopefully the season will be good,” Smith said.
The Robinesses prepare for their final pre-season fixture as they travel to face Sporting Khalsa on Sunday (August 11), before the league commences on August 18 with a home clash with Plymouth Argyle Women. A complete list of Cheltenham Town Women’s competitive fixtures can be found here.
