Cheltenham Town Women have captured former Loughborough Lightning wingback Abbey Hateley as signing number three for the summer.
Hateley makes the step up from the Fourth Tier of women’s football to join Cheltenham, after a near perfect season finishing second in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands.
Loughborough finished level on points with Sporting Khalsa who got promoted on goal difference and will compete in the FA WNL Northern Premier in 2024/25.
Speaking to Gloucestershire Live, Hateley spoke highly of Lightning’s great season and her time in Leicestershire: “We only lost one game last season and missing out on goal difference was disappointing.
“We had such a strong season, and the work rate was top tier throughout.
“It’s given me great work ethic. They made me confident in my abilities and brought me out of my shell.”
The 22 year old was delighted to get to grips with football at Tier Three and already feels comfortable in her new environment.
“Cheltenham’s a great club to be in and around, the girls have been supportive since day one,” she told Gloucestershire Live. “The coaching staff have been really encouraging.”
Hateley was enthusiastic to get back to competitive football, commenting: “I feel I’ve been pushed hard in training. I’m really enjoying it. We all work really hard for each other, so I’m really excited to get going in August.”
Lastly, the former Bristol City Academy player was asked on how she would describe herself to Robins supporters.
“I’m a wing-back, so as much as I’m a defensive player, I’m quite attacking too, so hopefully I can get a few assists this season to help the girls,” she said.
Manager Tom Davies couldn’t hide his delight with his latest addition.
“Abbey’s a real gem find for us in the off season,” he said.
“She’s worked tremendously hard during her time at Loughborough and since she’s been in thrown herself straight into the group and it feels like she’s been here forever.
“She’s quick, technically proficient and understands her role well, while she’s always pushing herself to absorb new information and develop her game.”
Hateley and her new teammates continue to prepare for the new campaign, as they welcome Plymouth Argyle to Kayte Lane for the season opener on August 18. For a list of the Robinesses’ competitive fixtures for 2024/25, click here.
